Well we’re finished with 2012 and have entered into the year 2013 with some bang bang trips and outdoor adventures. I probably should’ve written a blog before this one to keep one blog from being so long with so many pictures. Hey, hind sight is 20/20 so it’ll be picture heavy, jack.

Well we started off with a duck hunt on neighboring property. My friend Scott Lomax came down after Christmas and we planned a hunt together. Scott used to hunt with me a good bit before he had to change jobs and his work schedule started to conflict with his hunting schedules. We found a date that we could get together and off to the duck hole we went for a quick morning hunt. We got to the hole and settled in and we could hear the ducks over in the roost holes quacking, squealing, and cutting up. We hadn’t even scouted the hole and weren’t sure what to expect nor where to set up. We didn’t even have decoys, just two hunters with guns and a few duck calls. We settled down and started to love talk by calling to ducks on the water a few hundred yards away. We’d talk, they’d answer, We’d get quiet. After about a minute or two, we’d talk some more, they’d answer. We did this for about an hour and a half or so. Every once in a while, we’d hear them get up and head our direction. Now here is the impressive part. Normally when Scott and I hunt together we normally shoot a lot, I mean a whole lot but we don’t do a lot of killing. Well on this hunt we started off hot! We’d shoot, ducks would fall. We’d reset, recall, and repeat. After we’d knocked down a few ducks with a few shots we started acknowledging that we were shooting oddly well. Well, that was all we needed to return to former performance mode. Once we started bragging to each other about how well we were doing, we couldn’t hit anything! I mean we had ducks on top of us…. we’d empty both guns, ducks would circle back to the calls and we’d shoot some more to make sure they didn’t land in the water. We couldn’t hit repeat low ducks! It was all good though. We managed to carry out a stringer full! We also enjoyed a good time in a duck hole with two buds hunting together that don’t get to hunt like we used to. Here’s a few pics of our hunt.

Sweet bread baked into giant rubber rings with cream and plastic bits masquerading as glazed fruit in bright colours that fruit should never be.

Men in fancy dress, facepaint and beards on floats, throwing sweets at kids. Shoes laid out: presents for those who have been good, lumps of coal for those who haven't. And, all across the country, the return of football. From Iago Aspas for Celta to Pizzi and Deportivo and the appropriately named José Antonio Reyes, whose assist saved his manager at Sevilla and left Osasuna's manager moaning about finding himself "in the shit again", performances worth waiting for. They call it Reyes, Kings: Twelfth Night, 6 January: the night when the three wise men, the magic kings, arrived bearing gifts for Jesus.

For Jesús and María and Mateo. After a winter break in which everyone cast longing eyes at the English game and wondered why they couldn't have the same football calendar here, when they placed bets on which player wouldn't make it back on time this time and those who had Fabio Coentrao cashed in, when Dani Alves turned up to training in his pyjamas, and when only Catalonia and the Basque Country kept up the Christmas tradition of games for the regional 'national' teams; after a break in which Deportivo de la Coruña sacked their manager and Jorge Mendes brought them another one, and another Saint Innocents' day when no one could tell the joke stories from the real ones, and the queue to leave Spain grew longer, La Liga was back.

Well, most of La Liga: there's still one more game to play, stuck out on a limb as usual, occupying the Monday slot yet again is Rayo Vallecano. Football returned with 28 goals, starting with two more for Betis, now level with fourth-placed Málaga who occupy the final Champions League place. Mallorca did what Mallorca do but hadn't done much of lately, Kevin García scoring a late equaliser in an ugly game against Atlético Madrid.

Investing in the financial markets necessarily involves one’s ability to change perspectives over time.  Often the job of assessing what is important at any particular point becomes increasingly difficult in a period of heightened short-term volatility.  Not difficult in terms of staying focused on the factual reality of the economy, corporate earnings, etc., but difficult in that the financial media feels compelled to come up with rationales for daily movements in asset prices.  Possibly the single greatest task of any investor today is filtering out white noise.  And there’s more of the white noise than ever before.

So said the Contrary Investor; and I could not agree more given my sense that the media remains “long” volatility.  Indeed, every time volatility increases, so do my phone calls from the financial media as they feel "compelled to come up with rationales for daily movements in asset prices"; last week was no exception.  Verily, the week seemed to build on the previous week’s smackdown with Bloomberg’s Erik Schatzker, who I actually like very much, but challenged me on the point that it was the media that first termed the “fiscal cliff” Armageddon.  I had averred that it would certainly not be Armageddon, holding fast to the belief that when something absolutely had to happen inside the DC Beltway it has typically happened.  My comments were:
