The camp takes its name from Tannen’s Magic Store on West 34th Street in Manhattan, the oldest operating magic shop in New York City. Since 1925, it has attracted some of the most famous magicians in the world. The magic camp itself, which will mark its 39th year in 2013, lists alumni such as master illusionist David Blaine and actors Adrien Brody and Jason Alexander. Guest instructors have included David Copperfield and Criss Angel.

Ehrlich, who grew up not far from Tannen’s store in New York, is a former magic camp student. He was on hand for the Bryn Mawr screening Dec. 4 to talk about the film and the camp experience, along with several instructors and other alumni. (If you happened to see a man eating fire outside the theater on Lancaster Avenue, that was Daniel Greenwolf, now a regular performer at renaissance fairs and other venues.)

“I went there as a kid, and as a filmmaker, I knew I wanted to come back,” Erhlich said.
